Intensive Job-Specific Rehabilitation for Full Return to Work

Work Hardening

Our Work Hardening program is a comprehensive, goal-oriented rehabilitation program that addresses the functional, physical, behavioral, and vocational needs of injured workers through intensive work simulation and conditioning.

Overview

About Work Hardening

Work Hardening at Advantage Brain & Trauma is a highly structured, goal-oriented program designed to help injured workers return to their jobs safely and efficiently. Unlike Work Conditioning, which focuses primarily on physical capacity, Work Hardening is a multidisciplinary program that addresses functional, physical, behavioral, and vocational needs simultaneously.

The program typically runs 4 to 8 hours per day over a four-week period, featuring intensive strengthening and conditioning, cardiovascular training, behavioral and psychological counseling, and — most importantly — work simulation that replicates the exact physical demands of the patient's job, including specific work heights, weights, postures, and tolerances.

For patients returning to modified or limited duty, our unique 'Dove-Tailed Work Hardening' program offers shorter sessions designed to gradually bring workers back to full-duty status. Treatment plans can be customized to include weight management, personal training, vocational counseling, and nutritional counseling as needed.

Who Is This For?

  • Injured workers who need to return to physically demanding jobs
  • Patients requiring both physical and behavioral rehabilitation for return to work
  • Workers transitioning from modified duty to full duty
  • Patients who need intensive work simulation to rebuild job-specific capacity
  • Individuals with vocational and psychosocial barriers to return to work
Our Process

How It Works

1

Job Demands Analysis

A detailed analysis of the patient's job requirements is conducted, including specific work heights, weights, postures, and tolerances. On-site job evaluations may be performed when needed.

2

Comprehensive Assessment

The patient undergoes physical, behavioral, and vocational assessments to identify all barriers to return to work and establish baseline measurements.

3

Customized Program Design

A multidisciplinary treatment plan is developed addressing physical conditioning, work simulation, behavioral counseling, and vocational needs.

4

Intensive Work Simulation

Patients engage in progressively challenging work simulation activities that replicate their actual job demands, building capacity and confidence.

5

Behavioral & Vocational Support

Psychological counseling, pain management coaching, and vocational support address non-physical barriers to successful return to work.

6

Return-to-Work Coordination

The team coordinates with employers for a structured return to work, with options for graduated duty progression through our Dove-Tailed program.
